Topic: Bees
The recent loss of bee colonies is alarming. Although this has been going on for some time now, only recently have the scientist been placing importance on this issue. Just think of our world with no flowers or the crops that are pollinated from these amazing little workers.
Already there are areas where pollination is completed by the hand of man, with painstaking lengths and time...and of course it does not equal the job by natural means...the bees.
Is anyone else out there alarmed by this?

I agree, naturegirl, it is alarming.. Insects make up the largest fraction of terrestrial wildlife in the world (over half of all species), so it is vital that the fate of all insect groups is assessed, and of which bees have an essential role, in order to examine overall biodiversity.

It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by those amazing little workers.

Hi naturegirl... I'm alarmed too!

I've sow a movie... the Bee Movie (2007) with Jerry Seinfeld that explains on a funny way :)) what will happened if we loose bees colonies and pollination. I suggest to see it.

greetings

LC,
Thank you for the links.

Iolanda,
Thank you for your comments.

To you both and, as always, our awareness should be able to bring a light to these types of subjects and a possible solution.

You’re welcome, Naturegirl. And I thank you for bringing this topic to the group. Scientists have been warning us for years about the serious threat we face with GMO crops. The correlation and decline in bee populations is evidence of what they were saying. I hope we don’t get to a point of no return.

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man." – Albert Einstein

That is an interesting link, LC. The writer of the page says "the inability of the bees to pass matter digestively is quite similar to the present problems in the human digestive system".

It also says that "It must also be noted that this increased epidemic of the bee colony collapse has risen significantly since the use of GMO agriculture in our foods. It is also suspect in the rise of new cases of medical ailments in humans such as colon cancer, obesity, heart disease, etc..."

The evidence is very clear and alarming.

Thanks Kristina for mentioning that part of the essay. The death of bees (colony collapse disorder) is a key additional factor to what we discussed before in other topics about gmo; for it gives us a better understanding about the GMO issue.. something for which I'm sure will develop even more.

Here is an article with a few links worth reading: Over Here
