Topic: Climate change: Monsoon in India is too dry this year
From 18% to 25%. It's the decrease of the rains in this monsoon seasons in vary regions of India.

We've got a similar situation in the Mediterranean region, but the beginning of the summer was rainy so that we are not facing problems so far.

In eastern asia, there were widespread flooding incidents in the Korean peninsula while in northeast china and Mongolia it hasn't rained for a long time, resulting in drought, and people searching for drinking water. Their livestock also lacks drinking water and millions of hectares of crops are being affected. The decrease of rain in India is having an affect in its agricultural season.

Further down the road, an increasing world population and climate change will threaten many countries and we are going to see shifts in the world's food systems.

Northern European countries imports more than half of what they eat and it comes mainly from the Mediterranean countries (80 to 90% of fruits and vegetables, and they are also dependent on imported feeds for their livestock). Countries now with the ability to grow fruit and crops such as wheat, rice, maize and soya will suffer as their part of the world gets warmer and drier.

As the export to the northern Europeans gets more expensive, and their weather gets longer growing seasons, it will enable them to grow more of what they need.

So what we will be witnessing are shifts in agricultural practices and it has already begun. There is a british farmer who claims to be the first uk farmer to produce olives and he's experimenting with other stuff. Also in Britain, wine grapes are being grown way up north in Yorkshire and they even have a sparkling bubbly wine.. their own version of "champagn".

It's possible to grow Italian lemon trees in Germany ... a friend of mine bought a lemon tree here and she brought it back to Germany.

It's a fashion in Germany and note that they keep the trees like we keep them in Italy: in winter they left them outdoor, just covered by a sheet of plastic [like we do in Italy]. Lemon trees produce lemons also in Germany ....

... certainly Lemon trees will grow lemon only no matter where they are even in Asia they produce Lemons.:)

Shifts is agriculture is as old as Human evolution, however, the important aspect is that the threat of global warming has now started haunted some of the most productive and fertile regions of earth. The late rains in South Asia will have devastating results for monsoon is the season when food crops are grown massively...the drought has already caused failure of these crops what next we could experience is famine of irresistable strength...and yes there is who to blame then and how to feed the innumerable families and unfed children...

Plants change their charactoristcs when planted in different climate. For example Apple from Kashmir or Hamanchal (Temperate climate) is planted in, say, Maharashtra or Gujrat (Subtropic climate), no doubt it may produce few apple fruits, but these fruits would not be as tasty as grown in tropcs. Moreover, plant's growth will be slow and stunted. Plants grow and produce best in climate of their place of origin and/or similar climate.

Miss Bee is absolutely correct when she said Lemon will produce lemon fruit planted anywhere (if it survived).

@ Luka
Green houses (Plastic cover) are use when plants of warm climate are to be grown in cold climate. Translusent plastic sheet allow sun shine in the greenhouse and trap this energy to keep green house and plants warm.

Correct Ramesh ...

here I was making reference to the winter season and during night ... If you keep a lemon tree in home, it will suffer, losing leafs.

In evening top soil is warmer then atmospheric air, therefore, a covered plant is protected from cold air of night, effect of temprature inversion just before the sun rise. On the other hand warm top soil around the plant keep the plant relatively warm.

That's true.. the plants transpire water through their leaves. Covering the plant protects it from frost damage.

The northern Indian states of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana have all of the ingredients for groundwater depletion: staggering population growth, rapid economic development and water-hungry farms, which account for about 95% of groundwater use in the region
